Jamaican sprinter Junelle Bromfield recently opened up about a deeply personal and troubling experience she faced during the Paris Olympic Games.
Rather than focusing on the excitement surrounding the event, Bromfield found herself the target of cyberbullying over her relationship with Team USA sprinter Noah Lyles, the newly crowned Olympic 100m champion.
The backlash was harsh, with some Jamaicans labeling her a “sell-out” for dating Lyles, while others took it to the extreme, even sending death threats online to the 2020 bronze medalist.
Bromfield addressed the abuse in a heartfelt Instagram post, saying, “I honestly thought we were past colorism in Jamaica, especially as a nation that is filled with Black people.” She went on to share how the bullying escalated, stating, “I have been getting cyberbullied for weeks, and when it gets talked about, I’m a liar.”
But Bromfield wasn’t just there to talk about the pain—she also delivered a message of empowerment.
“I’m just here to tell all the girls/women on my profile that you’re beautiful no matter your shade, shape, or size,” she wrote. “And for the little Black girls don’t wait on anybody to tell you that your beautiful to believe it.”
Her words offered support and encouragement to those facing similar struggles.
Lyles, who has been dating Bromfield since 2022, came to her defense on social media, praising not only her strength but also the grace she’s shown while facing such intense criticism.
“Baby you are and will always be an inspiration to all little girls feeling this exact way. I can’t wait for the day that you tell your story in full because every girl that has felt what you are going through will know how amazing they can be and go on to do amazing things!” Lyles shared on Instagram.
Bromfield’s strength and resilience in the face of such adversity serve as a reminder of the challenges that these athletes can face beyond the track. And Lyles showed that while it can feel lonely in the spotlight, he’s supporting her through this tough time.
