Coco Gauff fired back after she was confronted over her comments about the Olympic village.
The 20-year-old got the full experience during the Paris 2024 Games and lived in the athlete quarters.
She later likened it to being on a college campus and was quickly questioned for her comparison.
Gauff walked away from the Olympics without a medal despite entering all three draws – singles, doubles and mixed doubles. But she still enjoyed the experience of a lifetime, being one of Team USA’s flagbearers during the opening ceremony and befriending athletes from other sports.
After returning to the regular tennis tour in Cincinnati, the world No. 2 shared what it was like to immerse herself in the athlete during a Tennis Channel interview. “It was really cool. It felt like a big college campus,” she said.
But one follower took issue with Gauff’s remark and thought she had no idea what she was talking about. “How the f*** would Coco Goff know what a college campus is? Please,” they commented.
It caught the US Open champion’s attention and she fired back with a simple but sassy answer, explaining that it wasn’t hard to understand why she was in the know. Gauff wrote: “I’m a 20 year old who is friends with other 20 year olds who are not all pro athletes. not too hard to put together.”
It sounds like Gauff was correct in comparing the experience to living at university. There were eight people in each accommodation, and fellow tennis star Tommy Paul explained that the guys would pair off to share four rooms in one apartment.
“I thought it would’ve been more of a hassle for me to pack up all of my stuff and move. And I was just having a good time in the village. I met some friends, the track team was super nice with me. I was hanging out with them the days that I was there.”
While some sportspeople decided to leave the village for a hotel or other accommodation after the opening ceremony, Gauff stuck around even when the tennis competitions started. She continued: “I decided to stay because I really was fine.
